Freed Veneers has entered into a commercial arrangement with the Australian based company Specialty Veneers, to supply a range of uniquely Australasian veneers and timbers to the Northern Hemisphere market.

The cooperative venture will see both companies benefit from their respective knowledge of and dominance in their particular markets, and will greatly enhance the choice of quality veneers and timbers available to the clients of both companies.

With a continued and growing interest in the use of rare and unique veneers from a number of industries including the prestige automotive sector, builders of super yachts, executive jet interiors, fine furniture and makers of bespoke musical instruments, there has never been a better time for Freed Veneers and Specialty Veneers to augment their current range of specialist timbers with those from the opposite hemispheres.

Huon Pine

White Ash, Natural Ash and Plantation Nitens are just a few of the new veneers that will be more readily available to the European market. Specialty Veneers has expressed great interest in introducing a selection of popular European figured and burl veneers from Freed Veneers manufacturing plant in Valencia, Spain to their marketing base, which includes China, Japan, Australia, Europe, New Zealand and the USA.

Both companies have a mutual goal of maximising the use of specialist and exotic timbers from around the world. The use of veneers from selected trees in well-managed forests can extend the rich beauty of a single tree to approximately 50 times that of using traditional solid timbers. In applications where weight is a deciding factor, the use of veneers can give the lasting effect of beautifully polished timber, with just six millimetres of natural resource.

The cooperation between the British and Australian veneer companies is viewed as a strategic and timely initiative that will meet the demands of a market with a growing appetite for using a wide range of veneer products. It represents an economic and resource-responsible way of creating products of lasting beauty, while promoting the value of sustainable use of our rich and rare timber resources.

Freed Veneers established for over 35 years in the wood business is proud to introduce the most innovative wood flooring product to date. At Freed Veneers we have always been cutting edge in new developments and technologies available to the wood industry. Now with its manufacturing partner Lèn Dilegno based in Italy we are excited to offer the third generation wood flooring product to the United Kingdom and Middle Eastern markets.

This innovative product, allows for the expanded usage of wood flooring in areas which have traditionally been avoided. It is the only wood product to be internationally certified for use with radiant floor heating, and is the only wood product which can be used with cement adhesives. It is excellent for sound proofing and is easy and cost effective to install. It is also the only wood product with the capabilities of grouting the joints, which enables the application in wet areas and it is pre-finished with a water based finish. Lèn Dilegno has a wide selection of exotic and traditional wood species. It is available in various colors, sizes and formats and is available in floating and glue down applications.

Lèn Dilegno is a natural, ecological and highly technical product which holds an international patent. This revolutionary product lends itself for use of both wall and floor coverings. The innovative process of stratifying and adhering several plies of real wood veneers achieves its incomparable stability. The exclusive and patented engineered backing is made up of a combination of recycled, ecological materials.

In 2000 Gierre Tranciati received ISO 9001 certification, after which it also received FSC certification, an international ONG recognition granted to products made from wood that comes exclusively from ecologically controlled forests.

Our partner, British Designer Alex McDiarmid, based in the South of France, is pleased to share the attached renderings of Superyacht Iwana 87m project.

The main superstructure takes its form from the head of a Dragon while the decks and communication tower are inspired by the dorsal crests of Dragons and beautiful marine iguanas. Something new, exciting and ‘moving the game on’.

Similar to panoramic roof windows on modern cars, the super structure integrates a full length, panoramic roof window running over the yacht. This incorporates a solar panel system in the ‘Magic Smart Glass’. All glass on the yacht is electronically and colour switchable changeing instantly for privacy, sun/glare protection and visual entertainment.
There appears to be huge expanses of glass used in the yacht. Obviously due to current manufacturing capabilities, a one piece large glazing structure can not be viably produced. Therefore an automotive glazing and bodywork technique is applied in ‘colourway break’. This in essence disguises the supporting structures behind the glass giving a visual impression of one continuous piece of material. The amount of natural daylight that enters the yacht is on another scale altogether.

In order to extend and maximise deck space aft, the hull opens into two, fold down, roll out, and wrap around bathing platforms. The inspiration for this comes from the sun loving, hood expanding, frill-necked lizards in hot countries. The platform incorporates part of the aft hull window turning into a partial glass bottomed floor allowing for the observation of underwater marine life and habitats. Owner decided, A-symmetrical fold out beach platform and seperate tender garage is a possibility as with many features on a yacht.

On the main deck, a social and relaxation zone, a swimming pool aft gives uninterupted views of the sea and sun bathing for guests. A jacuzzi located on the owners private dinning deck gives spectacular views from the yacht and plenty of room for invited guests. The upper deck sees a very private retreat for the owner inaddition to the private dinning deck. We have not cluttered the decks with excess furniture prefering to keep things simple.

Lighting is subtle around the superstructure, stairs and decks. The superstructure appears to float aft with lighting recessed at the base and a series of features cut into the structure. This along with the three main ‘window slashes’ cut into the superstructure and once lit at 100% gives for a spectacular scene.
The wrap around underwater hull effect is of course an option.

The transom and/or tender garage can hold a personal submersible housed longitudinally, craned out, rotated 90° once clear of the transom door and then winch lowered into the water. Custom tenders and toys are under development matching the exterior styling and livery of the yacht. Water toys include waverunners, sea scooters, windsurfers, kayaks, waterskis, wakeboards and a whole range of scuba and fishing gear are standard.

Vermont Wildwoods

Freed (Veneers) has a love of unique fabulous and unusual wood. We search the globe for the most spectacular wood patterns and once in a while a true gem turns up.

Vermont Wildwood’s business is forest-salvage. They work directly with loggers and foresters in order to get them to stop cutting the remaining healthy butternut trees. If they agree, we pay them a premium to bring out the diseased and dead trees.

Spalted Maple Veneer

Vermont WildWoods buys “culled” veneer logs from the maple sugar industry here in VT ( world famous for our maple syrup production)

The hardwood lumber and veneer industry does not want these logs as they have been drilled (tapped we call it) each spring to release their sweet sap. The seasonal drilled holes leave long brown streaks. We love the streaks. And for the auto industry their components are so small they can just cut around the “tap holes” if they don’t like them.

We think it makes an excellent story and is a neat design pattern.

Butternut Veneer

Butternut, or white walnut, is the lesser known member of the black walnut family. Butternut wood has the grain pattern of black walnut, a medium honey brown color with tan and red highlights.

Deep rich lustrous patina is prominent throughout our forest-salvage material. Add to that numerous small holes in the Wormy Grade, and the look is very similar to Wormy Chestnut.

We also produce Glass Butternut Wood Veneer panels which are a specially-formulated glass laminated veneer panel with resin inter-layers available in custom sizes. The panels offer environmental friendliness in a high performance building product. Available with a unique UV inhibitor, Butternut Wood Veneer Glass Panels are suitable for exterior applications.

Freed (Veneers) Ltd was amongst many of the worlds leading wood suppliers at the 2011 Monaco Superyacht show. With many leading yacht designers and boatbuilders present the company presented its latest wood finishes with great success. Laurence Freed has recognised that the new young breed of designers pave the way forward with designs in wood that will be forever recognised. His close association with one of the up and coming designers, McDiarmid Yacht & Design gave an insight into the latest design trends. The Middle East, Asia and South America are important markets for designers and new wood design concepts are being promoted.

Lots of interest too in the lightweight flame retardant panel called Litecore.Weight is always an issue in boat design and this Calcium Silicate board meets that expectation in quality and certification.
